The Life, Works and Teaching of Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio
This scholarly work focuses on the establishment in 1809, in what is today Northern Nigeria, of the celebrated Sokoto caliphate by Shehu (Sheikh) Usman Dan Fodio, which may well have been the last complete re-establishment, anywhere in the world, of Islam in its entirety, comprising all its many and varied dimensions.
History, like beauty, is to a great extent in the eyes of the beholder. Descriptions of the sane events inevitably differ, depending on who is giving the description, and from which perspective; and interpretations of events are even more diverse, especially when they come from people who did not actually witness what happened. There are, however, two basic perspectives from which history can be (and in fact always has been) viewed – whether it is ancient or modern, long past or still in process of taking place, in the library or in the daily media – and these can be identified as the prophetic perspective and the kafir perspective. This book explores and analyses these two perspectives, and in so doing draws attention to what happens in life.
Throughout history, civilisation has continuously passed through stages, and records bear out the progress achieved by humankind in ancient Egypt and Greece. After this, there was the golden age of scientific progress during the heyday of Muslim rule. When the Muslims faced decline on account of their internal bickering and other factors, the Europeans took over not only wealth and territory from them, but they established their supremacy in the domain of technical scientific knowledge as well. Contemporary youth is familiar with the contributions of Western scholars to Zoology and Botany, yet he knows nothing about the fact that the Muslims had introduced several centuries ago the artificial insemiation of animals and grafting of fruit-bearing plants. The discovery of America is attributed to Columbus yet it is unknown to him that the Arab navigators had reached the shores of the New World much earlier than Columbus, something borne out of the testimony of historical evidence. Scholars have made many attempts to remove the widespread ignorance about Muslims' contributions to knowledge. There is no shortage of voluminous works on the subject. However, most of these scholarly works are beyond the reach and understanding of the general public and the young students. Realising this need, the present work has been compiled in order to show a glimpse of the rich Muslim heritage.
The author of this treatise is al-Hafidh as-Suyuti. He was pure, kind, righteous, pious and observant of his sustenance. The wealthy leaders would come and visit, him and present wealth to him which he would reject. Towards the end of his life he secluded himself away in his homes and occupied himself with knowledge and authoring until he was afflicted with an illness which ended with his death in 911 AH (1505 CE), may Allah have mercy on him, May Allah reward the editor of this work with the best of rewards and increase him in success in order to produce more of the likes of these valuable treatises from the books of the Sunnah which are a light and blessing for the Muslims. We ask Allah, the Most Blessed, to make this work sincerely for His Noble Countenance and our last supplication is that all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.
The history of science is one of knowledge being passed from community to community over thousands of years, and this is the classic account of the most influential of these movements -how Hellenistic science passed to the Arabs where it took on a new life and led to the development of Arab astronomy and medicine, which flourished in the courts of the Muslim world and later passed on to medieval Europe. Starting with the rise of Hellenism in Asia in the wake of the campaigns of Alexander the Great, O'Leary deals with the Greek legacy of science, philosophy, mathematics, and medicine and follows it as it travels across the Near East propelled by religion, trade, and conquest. Dealing in depth with Christianity as a Hellenizing force, the influence of the Nestorians and the Monophysites, Indian influences by land and sea, and the rise of Buddhism, O'Leary then focuses on the development of science during the Baghdad Khalifate, the translation of Greek scientific material into Arabic, and the effect it had on the history of medicine, science, and historical geography, as well as the history of the Arab world.
To the world of today the men of medieval Christendom already seem remote and unfamiliar. Their names and deeds are recorded in our cities, but our kingship with them is a thing unreal, which costs an effort of the imagination.
Spanish Islam: A History of the Muslims in Spain by Dutch scholar Reinhart Dozy is a seminal 1913 historical work detailing the 800-year Islamic presence in Iberia (711–1492). Do not lose hope, as hopelessness is infidelity. What was a dream yesterday, is a reality today. What is a dream today, tomorrow it shall be a reality. And there is a vastness in time. Although the roots of mischief and riot are very strong, but the elements of health and security in the Muslim nations are very healthy and tremendous. Then weak does not always remain weak. The power of the powerful does also not always last forever.
This book describes the first two decisive battles fought by the Prophet Muhammad and his small Muslim community against those who attacked them. These two victories stand out as landmarks in the history of Islam from which many important lessons may be learned. Recommended for ages 8 and over.
The author examines in fascinating detail the discrepancies between dates in assorted calenders - the intercalated pre-islamic, the Hijri, and the Julian calenders - and the days of the week ascribed to different events in the sirah of the Prophet (saw). He painstakingly relates them to the different theoretical attempts evolved by scholars to try to make sense of the contradictions, and then makes an utterly compelling case for the one system that makes rational sense of all the data. This matter is of more than academic interest, since it is directly related to the fact that Islam is not a type of middle eastern myth - as New Testament Christianity and Old Testament Judaismare are increasingly regarded by modern man - but a clearly historical phenomenon whose revelation - the Qur'an - and whose practice - the Sunnah - derive directly from the Messenger of Allah (saw), one revealed from on high by the Divine and the other the embodiment by the Messenger and his noble family and companions of that revelation under the careful guidance of Allah.
This is the first complete English translation of Futuhusham, the ninth century Arabic classic detailing the Muslim advance into Syria This inspiring epic describes the events in detail and brings to life the great personalities of Islam in a unique way.
The Gospel of Barnabas is a non-canonical, 14th-century text often used in Islamic dawah to support the Islamic view of Jesus (Isa) as a human prophet rather than the Son of God, claiming he predicted the coming of Muhammad.
One of the most important parts of the history of the Prophet Muhammadrwas the Treaty of Hudaibiyah, which Allah referred to in the Qur’an as a ‘Clear Victory’ (48:1). This is a vivid account of the events leading to this Peace Treaty.
Another translation from the work of the renowned author of Medicine of the Prophet. Taken and translated from as-Suyuti's Tarikh al-Khulafa, this classical work presents the most authentic traditions concerning the first four Khalifs of Islam, the integrity and wisdom which they displayed in their governance, and their contributions to that body of practice which is known as the Sunnah.
